About 99% Media
99% Media is an experiment in collaborative curation. Our initial goal is simple: to collect the vast array of media emerging from the 99 percent movement and help the most powerful pieces rise to the top. Anyone can contribute media from places like YouTube, Vimeo, and Flickr, and then vote up their favorites. We've seeded the project with some of our favorite pieces. Please help the archive grow by adding your own!
Why are we doing this?
The explosion of people powered energy has created a flood of media online: videos, photos, posters, graphics, and more. Media teams on the ground have done an amazing job of capturing the most powerful moments. But the best materials is scattered across the web, and the things most often shared -- like clashes with police -- are just a slice of what this moment is about. This project is our humble attempt to bring order to the chaos. What's next?
This attempt at collaborative curation is an ambitious undertaking. But we already have our sights set on the next challenge: connecting those documenting on the ground with people who want to produce short films, photo montages, music videos, and so much else. We believe there are hundreds of incredible media makers who could unleash their talents in support of this movement if they had easier access to source material or make requests to those on the ground about things to document. Building a system for collaborative production is where we hope to take the site, so if that excites you please drop us a line at productions@99percentmedia.orgWho is behind this?
99% Media was created by a group of programmers, producers, designers, mediamakers, and activists in the Bay Area who are participating in and inspired by the Occupy efforts, and want to spread the story of this movement.
